Take part in one of Myanmar’s holiest pilgrimage sites to the Golden Rock (Kyaikthiyo), a boulder shrine covered in gold leaf that delicately, miraculously balances at the edge of a cliff. No other natural wonder like it exists in the world. The gravity-defying boulder is thought to be imbued with celestial properties by a holy hair relic of the Buddha. Pilgrims from all over Myanmar and Asia dream of coming to Kyaikthiyo at least once in their lifetime to see and touch the boulder. From the Golden Rock, views of the wooded hills shrouded in mist and accompanied by the wisps of incense create a surreal and totally unforgettable experience. En route to the Golden Rock, we visit Bago, the capital of the ancient Mon Kingdom and one of the richest archeological sites in Myanmar.

Brief Itinerary

Day 1: Yangon - Bago – Golden Rock (Kyaikthiyo)

Day 2: Golden Rock – Bago – Yangon

Day 1:  Yangon - Bago – Golden Rock (Kyaikthiyo)
You have a morning pickup in Yangon and drive for around 1.5 hours/80 km to Bago, where you visit a Buddhist Monastery for a brief introduction to monastic life and the principles of Buddhism, the main faith practiced in Myanmar. After observing monks gather for their last meal of the day before noon it is time for us to head to a local restaurant for a lunch break.  After lunch you continue 3.5 hours/110 km to Kin Pun base camp to change your mode of transport to an open truck. The ride is shared with local pilgrimage makers for the next 11km to Yathetaung base camp, located 500m below the summit ridge. A further 1-hour hike up a fairly steep road and a paved trail leads us to the summit. The Golden Rock, or Kyaikthiyo as the Burmese call it, is a fascinating sacred boulder covered in gold leaf and balanced precariously on the edge of a cliff. Crowning the boulder is a small shrine believed to contain Buddha’s hair relics, the source of the gravity defying magic. A continual stream of pilgrims from Myanmar and Asia come to witness the wonder at least once in their lifetime. Enjoy the tranquil sunset, soak in the unique atmosphere and share in wonder with fellow monk, nun, and lay pilgrims.

*The Royal Treatment * for those who would prefer relaxation the entire way, they can enjoy views from a bamboo sedan chair carried by four local porters. Trip guides at the base of the climb can make arrangements. Prices are determined by season, availability and body weight (typical rates run around 30 USD).

Meals included:                       Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 2: Golden Rock – Bago – Yangon
You wake up early for lovely sunrise views and a quiet morning stroll. You have breakfast at the hotel before descending back to Kin Pun base camp. You drive 3.5-hours/110 km to Bago, one of richest archeological sites in Myanmar and the ancient capital of the Mon Kingdom. You visit the impressive 55m reclining Buddha of Shwe Tha Lyaung and marvel at the 114m high Shwemawdaw Pagoda.  Taller than even the famous Swedagon in Yangon, the golden spire of the Shwemawdaw is a popular pilgrimage site for Buddhist devotees. After lunch we will visit a Mon weaving village near Bago. The rest of the 1.5 hour/80 km drive to Yangon is broken up with visits to the Nat Three Shrine dedicated to a legendary Nat spirit, the Kyaik Pun Pagoda with its four giant Buddha images, and the Allied Troops War Cemetery honoring 6,000 war heroes of WWII.  The Golden Rock excursion ends at your hotel in Yangon or at Yangon airport.
